Thunderbird E-Mail Migration User Doc

Thunderbird 2.X

1.         Make sure your UBIT e-mail account is activated. You can do this by clicking on this link;  http://email.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/enable.pl

In Thunderbird, create a new account for the UBIT e-mail account

a.      Go to Tools and click on Account Settings.

 

b.     

Then click on the Add Account button.

 

c.      

When the New Account Setup Window appears, make sure Email Account is selected then click on Next.

 

d.     

When the Identity window appears, enter your name how you would like it to be displayed and enter your UBIT e-mail address, ex: jdoe@buffalo.edu Click Next.

 


 

e.     

When the Server Information window appears, select IMAP. For the Incoming Server: field enter, imap.buffalo.edu then click on Next.

 

f.       

When the User Names window appears, enter your UBIT username  in the Incoming User Name field then click Next.

 


 

g.     

When the Account Name window appears, enter the description for the account that you would like, ex: UBIT E-mail. Then click on Next.

 

h.     

When the Congratulations! Window appears, check to make sure the info is correct. The Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) field may be incorrect. We will correct this in a moment. If everything else looks good click on the Finish button.

 

i.       

You should be back at the Account Settings window. In the left-hand pane of this window, scroll down until you see the UBIT E-Mail account that you just created. Click on the Server Settings just below the UBIT E-Mail section.

 

j.       

You will see, on the right hand side of the window, that the information has changed. Select SSL under the Security Settings section.

k.       Do Not click on the OK button as the next step will be using this window as well.

l.       

You should still be at the Account Settings window. In the left-hand pane of this window, scroll down to the bottom and click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings. Click the Add button on the right side of the window.

 

m.    When the SMTP Server window appears enter following info:

                                      i.      For the Description field enter UBIT SMTP.

                                    ii.      For the Server Name field enter smtp.buffalo.edu.

                                  iii.     

If this is a desktop machine that you are configuring e-mail for Uncheck the box Use name and password and  click the OK button. Then proceed to step n. If this is a laptop, please continue to follow these instructions.

 

 

                                   iv.      Make sure the Use name and password box is checked. Enter your UBIT username in the User Name: field. Then click on the OK button.


n.     

You should see UBIT SMTP – smtp.buffalo.edu in the right side of the Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings window. Select UBIT SMTP – smtp.buffalo.edu and click on the Set Default button.

 

o.      This completes the UBIT E-Mail account setup.

 

 

 

3.         Remove the forward from UBIT to ENG or NSM e-mail

a.      Cut and paste this link into your Internet browser and follow the directions; http://ubit.buffalo.edu/mail/forwarding/remove.php

b.      Possibly add an option to use SAMBA. Only thing is people may have trouble connecting to SAMBA. Would love feedback on this one.

 

4.         Put a forward on your SENS e-mail account to send SENS email to your UBIT account

a.      This can be a little tricky. If you are not familiar or comfortable using a UNIX terminal shell/session please e-mail senshelp@buffalo.edu and we will assist you with this.

b.      If you are comfortable using a UNIX terminal session then follow these steps;

                                      i.      Please SSH into unix.eng.buffalo.edu or unix.nsm.buffalo.edu This can be done by running Putty. If you do not have Putty please click on this link to download it and follow the instructions that are at this link; http://ubit.buffalo.edu/software/win/putty.php

                                    ii.     

Once installed, click on the link for Putty that was just created and enter unix.eng.buffalo.edu or unix.nsm.buffalo.edu in the Host name field and click on Open.

 


 

                                  iii.     

You will see a window like the one below. At the login: prompt, enter your ENG or NSM username and password when prompted.

 

                                   iv.      Once logged in type the following at the prompt to remove your .forward file if it exists with out the ~>;

~> rm .forward

                                     v.      Next type the following with out the ~> to create a proper .forward file;

~> pico .forward

                                   vi.     

You should get a window that looks like this;

 

                                 vii.      Type in your e-mail address which should look something like this where ubitname is your UBIT username;

ubitname@buffalo.edu

                               viii.     

Now hit the Ctrl-X key sequence and press Y to save .forward file.

 

                                   ix.      To verify the file was created, type with out the ~>;

~> more .forward

                                     x.      You have successfully created a .forward file.

 

5.         Copy e-mail folders from ENG or NSM account to UBIT e-mail account

a.      This can be done by dragging and dropping folders from your ENG or NSM e-mail account into your UBIT e-mail account.

b.      Make sure that you click on the folder and wait for it to refresh. If you do not, you may lose messages in that folder.


 

6.         After all the email has been transferred to the UBIT account and you have confirmed that the folders copied over fine, delete the account for ENG or NSM e-mail.

 

                                      i.      Go to Tools and click on Account Settings.


                                    ii.     

The Account Settings window should appear. Click on the ENG or NSM e-mail in the left pane of the this window.

 

                                  iii.     

The ENG or NSM account should be selected. At the bottom of the Account Settings window click on the Remove Account button.

 

                                   iv.     

You should see the Remove Account window appear. Click the OK button.

 

                                     v.      You should be back at the Account Settings window. Click on the OK button to complete the E-Mail Migration instructions.
