UBiquity Citrix USB Access

Introduction

It is convenient to take work you've done in UBiquity Citrix and save it to removable media, especially USB "flash" drives (or "USB keys").

However, the SENS Citrix servers do not give access to local hardware on the connected systems. In order to move data from UBiquity Citrix to a USB key on a system connected to it, you need to use an indirect method, as described below.

Linux

Here is what you do if you are using Citrix on a Linux system, such as those in 211/212 Furnas Hall:

  1. Log in to UBiquity Citrix and save your work to either the I: or N: drive.
  2. Close any programs that have access to the files you want to copy, or just log out of UBiquity Citrix.
  3. Insert the USB key into the USB port (these are located either on the left hand side of the LCD or on the front of the computer itself). A USB key icon should pop up on the desktop.
  4. **Most USB keys work on Linux systems supported by SENS. However, some are specifically formatted for certain operating systems (ie. Mac OS X or Windows) and will not work properly.** The filesystem with the lowest common denominator for portability among various Microsoft and non-Microsoft computers is the FAT32 filesystem, used on older versions of Microsoft Windows (95, 98, ME, etc.)
  5. You can find your work by double-clicking the "User's Home" folder on the desktop.
  6. Anything saved in "I:" is in your "winfiles" folder in your home folder (eg: "/eng/home/UBITname" as viewed on a Unix or Linux system, or "\\sens_eng\UBITname" from a Microsoft Windows file sharing point of view).
  7. Anything saved in "N:" is in the top level of your home folder (eg. "/nsm/home/UBITname/winfiles" or "\\sens_nsm\UBITname\winfiles").
  8. Double-click the USB Key icon and a window will open up, showing you the files on your USB key.
  9. You may drag on drop files from your home folder to the USB key and vice-versa as needed.

When you are done …

  1. Close any open windows that have access to your USB key.
  2. Right-click on the USB key icon and select "Unmount Volume"; this insures that all data is copied to/from the USB key before you remove it.
  3. When the USB key icon disappears from the desktop it is safe to remove the USB key from the computer.
