SENS Web Style Guide

Getting Started with SENS

Setting up your SENS account

You are eligible for a SENS account if:

  • You are currently affiliated with the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences or Natural Sciences & Mathematics (including Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, or Physics)
  • You are not affiliated with either school, but have a legitimate reason for needing an account (access to materials for a class, access to a lab, etc.)

To request a SENS account, please fill out the form here.

Accessing SENS

To access SENS, you'll need to use the timeshare. Timeshare, in this case, does not refer to a vacation home that you share with other people, although the concept is similar: you're sharing time on the SENS servers with other users. In order to do that, you'll need to log in. For instructions on doing that, please see Remote Access to SENS Timeshare Systems.

Setting your Password

The initial password for your SENS account will be your 8-digit person number. It is extremely important for you to change this password immediately in order to protect your account from unauthorized access.

To do so, open a telnet or ssh session to unix.eng.buffalo.edu for Engineering accounts, or to password.nsm.buffalo.edu for Natural Sciences and Mathematics accounts. Enter your UBITName, then enter your 8-digit person number, without any spaces or punctuation, as your password. At the prompt, type this command:

 passwd

You will be asked for your current password, and then twice for a new password. The passwords you type will not be displayed on the screen.
